Phellodendron, particularly the bark of Phellodendron amurense (Amur cork tree), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In TCM, it is included in formulations for treating "heat" and "toxicity," which sometimes encompasses oral and gum diseases such as gingivitis. Historically, Phellodendron bark (known as Huang Bai) has been applied topically or used in mouth rinses for oral inflammation. However, the evidence supporting its use in gingivitis is primarily based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation.

Some in vitro studies have shown that extracts from Phellodendron possess antibacterial properties against oral pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans, which are implicated in gingivitis and periodontal disease. However, clinical studies in humans are extremely limited. There are a few small-scale or animal studies suggesting potential benefits in reducing inflammation or bacterial load, but these are preliminary and insufficient for a high evidence rating.

As of now, mainstream dentistry does not recognize Phellodendron as a validated treatment for gingivitis, and it is not widely used in evidence-based clinical practice for this purpose. Its use is thus primarily justified by tradition, with some low-level preclinical scientific support but lacking robust clinical trials in humans.
