Phaeophyceae, commonly known as brown algae (including species such as Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus, and Laminaria spp.), have been investigated for their potential benefits in oral health, including gingivitis. The justification for their use is primarily based on scientific research, though the evidence is still emerging and largely preclinical or from small-scale human studies. Brown algae contain bioactive compounds such as fucoidan, laminarin, and phlorotannins, which exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from Phaeophyceae can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens associated with gingivitis and reduce inflammatory responses in oral tissues. Some mouthwashes and oral care products incorporate brown algae extracts for these purported effects. However, clinical trials in humans are limited; a few small studies and pilot trials suggest potential benefits in reducing gingival inflammation and plaque formation when using brown algae-derived ingredients, but the sample sizes and methodological quality vary. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence supporting the use of Phaeophyceae in managing gingivitis, robust clinical evidence is lacking, and it is not yet a mainstream or guideline-supported therapy.
