Evidence supporting the use of: Pagoda Tree
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
The use of Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora japonica) for treating gingivitis is primarily grounded in traditional medicine, especially within Chinese and East Asian herbal practices. Historically, the dried flower buds (known as "Huai Hua Mi") have been employed for their purported anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and antimicrobial properties. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts cite the use of Pagoda Tree extracts for oral health problems, including bleeding gums and gum inflammation, which are symptomatic of gingivitis.
Regarding scientific evidence, a limited number of in vitro studies indicate that extracts of Pagoda Tree flowers possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities that may be relevant to oral pathogens implicated in gingivitis. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically addressing gingivitis are lacking. Few small-scale investigations or animal studies suggest possible benefits, but no large-scale, well-designed clinical studies have confirmed efficacy for this indication. Thus, while its traditional use is well established, scientific validation remains preliminary and insufficient to strongly support its clinical application for gingivitis.
In summary, Pagoda Tree’s use in gingivitis management is justified mainly by tradition, with limited and low-quality scientific evidence available to support its effectiveness.
