Nimbidin is a major active compound isolated from the seeds of Azadirachta indica (neem). Its use in the management of gingivitis is supported by some scientific studies, though the evidence is not robust or extensive. Experimental research has demonstrated that nimbidin possesses significant anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory effects. Specifically, in vitro studies have shown that nimbidin can inhibit the growth of common oral pathogens implicated in gingivitis, such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Animal studies and limited clinical trials with neem extracts (which contain nimbidin among other compounds) suggest a reduction in gingival inflammation and plaque formation when used as a mouth rinse or in dental products. However, direct clinical trials evaluating isolated nimbidin for gingivitis are scarce, and most evidence is extrapolated from studies on whole neem extracts. Current data justify its use as an adjunct, but not as a primary or standalone therapy for gingivitis. Further high-quality, controlled clinical trials are needed to clarify the efficacy and safety of nimbidin specifically for this condition.
