Lactobacillus reuteri and Gingivitis: Scientific Evidence
Lactobacillus reuteri is a probiotic bacterium that has been increasingly researched for its potential benefits in oral health, particularly in managing gingivitis. Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have explored its efficacy. Most notably, L. reuteri strains (e.g., DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289) have demonstrated a capacity to reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding when administered via lozenges, tablets, or probiotic supplements.
The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the oral microbiome, inhibition of pathogenic bacteria (such as Porphyromonas gingivalis), and downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. A 2017 systematic review published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology found moderate evidence that L. reuteri supplementation, as an adjunct to regular oral hygiene, resulted in statistically significant improvements in gingival indices compared to placebo. Additionally, a 2020 randomized clinical trial showed decreased plaque index and gingival bleeding in subjects who received L. reuteri lozenges over 8 weeks.
However, while the evidence is promising and generally supports adjunctive use, most studies have small sample sizes and short durations. There is still a need for larger, longer-term trials to confirm both the efficacy and safety of L. reuteri for gingivitis. In summary, scientific evidence—though not yet definitive—does validate the use of L. reuteri as a supportive therapy for gingivitis.
