Evidence supporting the use of: Kefir
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Kefir, a fermented milk drink rich in probiotics, has been investigated for its potential benefits in oral health, particularly gingivitis. Scientific studies have shown that probiotics may play a role in modulating the oral microbiome, reducing inflammation, and inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria associated with periodontal diseases. Several small clinical trials and in vitro studies have specifically evaluated the effects of kefir and similar probiotic products on gingival health. These studies suggest that consuming kefir or using probiotic lozenges can lead to a reduction in plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation, likely due to the restoration of microbial balance and suppression of harmful bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans.
However, the current evidence is limited in both scale and quality, with most studies being short-term, involving small sample sizes, and sometimes lacking rigorous controls. While the preliminary results are promising and suggest a potential adjunctive role for kefir in managing gingivitis, larger and more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings and establish standardized protocols for use. Existing dental guidelines do not currently recommend kefir as a primary treatment for gingivitis, but it may be considered as a complementary approach due to its safety profile and potential benefits observed in early studies.
