Isothiocyanates are sulfur-containing compounds found naturally in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, watercress, and mustard. Their use in oral health, particularly in treating gingivitis, has gained attention due to their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientific studies have demonstrated that certain isothiocyanates, such as benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) and sulforaphane, can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens commonly associated with gingivitis, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. These compounds have also been shown to reduce biofilm formation and decrease the production of inflammatory mediators in gingival tissues.
Clinical evidence, while still emerging, supports the use of isothiocyanate-containing mouth rinses or gels as adjuncts to standard oral hygiene. For example, randomized controlled trials using BITC-containing mouth rinses have demonstrated reductions in plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation compared to placebo. However, the number and scale of these trials remain limited, and longer-term studies are needed to confirm their efficacy and safety.
In summary, the use of isothiocyanates for gingivitis is supported by promising preclinical and some clinical evidence, particularly regarding their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
