Geraniol, a monoterpenoid alcohol found in essential oils such as citronella, rose, and palmarosa, has demonstrated some scientific evidence supporting its use for gingivitis, though the evidence is limited and primarily preclinical or from small-scale human studies. The potential benefit is attributed to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In vitro studies have shown that geraniol can inhibit the growth of key oral pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans, which are implicated in the pathogenesis of gingivitis. Additionally, animal studies have suggested that geraniol may reduce gingival inflammation and oxidative stress. A few small clinical studies and pilot trials have evaluated mouthwashes or dental gels containing geraniol or geraniol-rich essential oils, reporting reductions in gingival bleeding and plaque indices. However, these studies often suffer from methodological limitations such as small sample sizes, short durations, and use of multi-ingredient formulations, making it difficult to attribute the effects specifically to geraniol.
