Genipap (Genipa americana) is a fruit-bearing tree native to tropical regions of the Americas and has a history of use in traditional medicine by indigenous peoples. Ethnobotanical reports from South America, especially Brazil, indicate that preparations of genipap leaves, bark, or fruit have been used in folk medicine as mouthwashes or topical applications to manage oral inflammation and infections, including gingivitis. The rationale for its use is often attributed to the perceived astringent and anti-inflammatory properties of the plant’s extracts. However, scientific studies directly examining genipap's efficacy for gingivitis are scarce.
