Evidence supporting the use of: Cluster Fig
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cluster Fig (Ficus racemosa) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems for oral health, including the management of gum diseases like gingivitis. In Ayurveda, the bark, fruit, and latex of the Cluster Fig tree have been applied as remedies for various inflammatory conditions, including oral and dental problems. The stem bark, in particular, is considered to have astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help in reducing gum swelling and bleeding associated with gingivitis. Decoctions or powdered forms of the bark have been used as mouth rinses or applied topically to the gums.
However, scientific validation of these traditional uses is limited. While some preliminary in vitro studies have shown that extracts of Ficus racemosa possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, direct clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for gingivitis is lacking. There are no large-scale, controlled human clinical trials that directly assess its efficacy in treating or preventing gingivitis. Thus, current support for its use in gingivitis is rooted primarily in traditional practices, with only modest supporting laboratory data. More rigorous scientific studies would be necessary to justify its use by modern clinical standards.
