Clerodendrum trichotomum, commonly known as Harlequin Glorybower, has a history of use in traditional medicine in East Asia, particularly in Chinese and Japanese folk medicine. It has been employed for a variety of ailments, including inflammatory conditions. There are references in ethnobotanical literature to its use for treating oral conditions, including gingivitis, due to its purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Extracts from its leaves and stems have demonstrated some antibacterial activity against oral pathogens in in vitro studies, but these findings are preliminary and have not been systematically validated in clinical trials specifically for gingivitis.

Despite the traditional uses and some promising laboratory data, there is a lack of rigorous scientific studies—such as randomized controlled trials—specifically investigating Clerodendrum trichotomum’s efficacy and safety for gingivitis in humans. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and supported by some low-level laboratory evidence, current scientific support remains weak. Further research is needed before it can be recommended for this purpose in evidence-based dental care.
