Evidence supporting the use of: Celosia
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Celosia, particularly Celosia argentea, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and various African folk practices. In TCM, Celosia seeds (commonly referred to as "Qing Xiang Zi") are sometimes used for their purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. While the plant as a whole is known for its applications in the treatment of conditions like bleeding disorders, eye diseases, and wounds, its use for gingivitis is based primarily on its general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions, which are believed to help reduce gum inflammation and control oral pathogens. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional pharmacopoeias occasionally mention Celosia preparations as mouth rinses or poultices for gum health, though specifics on preparation and dosage are often lacking. However, despite widespread traditional use, there is a lack of robust clinical studies or systematic scientific evidence directly validating Celosia’s effectiveness for gingivitis in humans. Most available research focuses on its general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro or in animal models, and only rarely are oral health outcomes specifically evaluated. Therefore, while its use for gingivitis is justified by tradition and some plausible pharmacological rationale, scientific evidence remains limited and preliminary.
