Caryophyllene is a natural bicyclic sesquiterpene found in many essential oils, notably clove oil, and is recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its use for gingivitis is supported by some scientific, primarily preclinical, evidence. Several studies have demonstrated that β-caryophyllene exhibits significant anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, which are relevant to the pathogenesis of gingivitis, a common inflammatory condition of the gums caused by bacterial plaque.

For instance, in vitro and animal studies have shown that β-caryophyllene can reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines and inhibit the growth of oral pathogens associated with periodontal diseases. A 2014 study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research reported that β-caryophyllene reduced inflammation and oxidative stress in oral tissues in rats with induced periodontitis. However, human clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy in treating gingivitis are lacking.

Thus, while the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of caryophyllene are scientifically plausible mechanisms for supporting gum health, direct clinical evidence in humans is limited. Therefore, the current rating reflects promising but preliminary evidence, and further research, particularly well-designed human studies, is required to establish its therapeutic benefits for gingivitis.
