Borassus aethiopum, commonly known as African fan palm, has a history of traditional medicinal use in several African cultures. Its various parts, including roots, leaves, and fruits, are often incorporated into local remedies for numerous ailments, including oral health issues such as gingivitis. The traditional use for gingivitis is typically based on the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to the plant in folk medicine. For example, in some West African ethnobotanical surveys, Borassus aethiopum is noted as an ingredient in herbal pastes or decoctions used to treat gum inflammation and oral infections. However, while these practices are widespread, there is a lack of robust clinical or laboratory evidence specifically validating the effectiveness of Borassus aethiopum for the treatment or support of gingivitis. A limited number of phytochemical studies have indicated that extracts from the plant contain phenolic compounds and other constituents with potential antimicrobial effects. Nevertheless, direct studies on the efficacy, safety, and mechanism of action of Borassus aethiopum in gingivitis are absent in the scientific literature.
