Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) has been investigated for its potential role in supporting oral health, including the prevention and management of gingivitis. The scientific interest centers on the high content of polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, which have been shown to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that blueberry extracts can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum, which are implicated in gingival inflammation and periodontal disease. Additionally, some small-scale clinical studies have evaluated the effects of blueberry-based mouth rinses or lozenges on markers of gingival inflammation, reporting modest reductions in gingival bleeding and plaque accumulation compared to placebo.
However, while these preliminary findings are promising, the overall body of clinical evidence remains limited, with few large, well-controlled human trials. Most available data derive from laboratory experiments or short-term pilot studies. No major dental or medical organizations currently recommend blueberry or its extracts as a primary treatment for gingivitis. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and early-stage evidence supporting the use of blueberry for gingivitis, the strength of evidence is rated as low to moderate (2/5) and further research is needed to substantiate its efficacy and establish standard dosing or formulations.
