Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) has some scientific evidence supporting its use in the treatment and prevention of gingivitis, though the overall quality and quantity of evidence are limited. BITC is a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables and is known for its antimicrobial properties. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated BITC's effectiveness against oral pathogens implicated in periodontal diseases, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans. Additionally, BITC has been formulated in certain oral care products, such as mouthwashes and toothpastes, with claims of reducing plaque and gingival inflammation.

Some clinical studies, including randomized controlled trials, have evaluated the efficacy of BITC-containing oral care products. These studies report modest improvements in gingival health and reductions in plaque scores compared to placebo, although the magnitude of benefit is generally less than that seen with established agents like chlorhexidine. The mechanism of action is believed to involve disruption of bacterial cell walls and inhibition of bacterial enzyme activity, leading to decreased biofilm formation.

Despite these findings, the evidence base remains limited, with few large-scale, long-term clinical trials. Regulatory agencies have not universally endorsed BITC for gingivitis treatment, and it is not considered a first-line therapy. In summary, there is some scientific validation for BITC's use in gingivitis, but the supporting evidence is moderate and further research is needed to establish its efficacy and safety profile relative to standard treatments.
