Evidence supporting the use of: Banyan
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and folk medicine for oral health, including the management of gingivitis. The twigs of the banyan tree have long served as natural toothbrushes (chewing sticks) in India and other regions, a practice rooted in historical and cultural customs. The antibacterial properties of the plant's latex and bark have been cited in traditional medical texts as beneficial for oral hygiene and gum health. There are a few in vitro and small-scale studies suggesting that extracts of banyan bark or twigs exhibit some antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens associated with gingivitis. However, robust clinical trials or large-scale scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for treating or preventing gingivitis specifically are lacking. Most of the support for its use comes from longstanding tradition rather than modern scientific validation. In summary, while there is a historical and cultural basis for the use of banyan in oral health, including gingivitis, scientific evidence is limited and mostly preliminary. As such, its use is justified primarily by tradition rather than solid scientific proof.
