Evidence supporting the use of: Bacillus
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacillus species, particularly Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis, are spore-forming probiotics that have been investigated for their potential benefits in oral health, including gingivitis. The scientific evidence supporting their use is emerging but currently limited. Some in vitro studies and small clinical trials suggest that Bacillus probiotics may help modulate the oral microbiome, inhibit pathogenic bacteria associated with gingivitis (such as Porphyromonas gingivalis), and reduce inflammation. For example, a 2020 randomized controlled trial found that a lozenge containing Bacillus coagulans improved certain clinical parameters of gingivitis compared to placebo, though the sample size was modest and the duration short (30 days). Other studies have shown reductions in plaque index and bleeding on probing when Bacillus-based probiotics are used as adjuncts to standard oral hygiene. However, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are lacking, and the mechanisms of action remain under investigation. Current dental guidelines do not recommend Bacillus probiotics as standard therapy for gingivitis, but they may be considered as a supplementary approach. In summary, there is preliminary scientific validation for Bacillus use in gingivitis, but the evidence is not robust, and more research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
