Evidence supporting the use of: Aloe
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Aloe vera has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing gingivitis, a common inflammatory condition of the gums. Scientific studies, primarily randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews, have evaluated the effects of Aloe vera gel as a mouth rinse or topical application on gingival health. The evidence indicates that Aloe vera exhibits anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, which may help reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding associated with gingivitis.
Several clinical trials have compared Aloe vera mouth rinses to chlorhexidine or placebo. For example, a 2014 randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology found that Aloe vera mouthwash was as effective as chlorhexidine in reducing plaque and gingival indices over a four-week period. A 2016 systematic review in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research concluded that Aloe vera could be a useful adjunct to conventional therapy for gingivitis, although more high-quality studies are needed.
While the overall evidence base is still limited and further large-scale, long-term studies are necessary, current research supports the use of Aloe vera as a supplementary treatment to improve gingival health. Its use is generally regarded as safe, with minimal side effects reported. However, Aloe vera should not replace standard oral hygiene practices or professional dental care.
