Polyphenols are a broad class of naturally occurring compounds found in plants, including fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, and wine. Their use in supporting or treating gastritis is increasingly supported by scientific research. Gastritis is characterized by inflammation of the stomach lining, often caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, NSAID use, or other irritants. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that polyphenols, particularly flavonoids like quercetin and catechins, possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. These mechanisms may help reduce gastric mucosal inflammation and limit damage caused by oxidative stress.
Some human studies have also suggested that diets rich in polyphenols—such as those containing green tea, berries, and certain herbs—may help protect the gastric mucosa and even inhibit the growth of H. pylori. However, the evidence in humans is still limited and largely based on observational or small-scale intervention studies, rather than large randomized controlled trials. While there is promising preclinical and some clinical evidence, more robust human data are needed to establish polyphenols as a standard treatment for gastritis.
