Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Menthol oil, commonly derived from peppermint (Mentha piperita), is scientifically supported for use in managing gas and bloating, particularly as a component of peppermint oil. Several clinical trials have demonstrated that peppermint oil, which contains high concentrations of menthol, can significantly reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including abdominal pain, bloating, and flatulence.

The primary mechanism by which menthol oil helps alleviate gas and bloating is through its antispasmodic properties. Menthol relaxes the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract by blocking calcium channels, which can reduce spasms and the sensation of bloating. Additionally, menthol has mild carminative effects, helping to expel gas from the intestines.

A 2019 meta-analysis in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies reviewed multiple randomized controlled trials and found that peppermint oil was significantly more effective than placebo in relieving overall IBS symptoms, especially bloating and abdominal discomfort. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and several gastroenterology guidelines also recognize peppermint oil (and by extension menthol) as a treatment option for functional abdominal disorders.

However, most of the evidence comes from studies using enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules rather than menthol oil alone. While menthol is the main active component, whole peppermint oil may contain other compounds that contribute to its effects. Still, the evidence for menthol’s role in reducing gas and bloating is strong, justifying its use for these symptoms.
