Varuna (Crataeva nurvala) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for a range of urinary and biliary conditions, including support for gall bladder health. Traditional Ayurvedic texts describe Varuna as a herb that can help promote the flow of bile and support the dissolution and prevention of gallstones, as well as aid in the management of sluggish gall bladder function. Its use is generally rooted in the belief that it has "biliary stimulating" and "litholytic" (stone-dissolving) properties, which is why it is sometimes recommended for individuals with sluggish gall bladders or those who have had their gall bladder removed, to help manage bile flow and prevent stone formation in the biliary tract. Scientific studies on Varuna’s effects are limited, and most evidence comes from animal studies or in vitro research, with only a few small-scale clinical studies available. These studies suggest that Varuna may have some beneficial effects on bile composition and may help reduce cholesterol saturation in bile, a factor in gallstone formation. However, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its use for gall bladder support remains primarily traditional, there is some emerging, albeit preliminary, scientific interest. Overall, the traditional use of Varuna for gall bladder health is well documented, but scientific validation is currently limited.
