Evidence supporting the use of: Sichuan Lovage
For the health condition: Gall Bladder (sluggish or removed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sichuan Lovage (Ligusticum chuanxiong, also known as Chuanxiong) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its primary uses in TCM are to invigorate blood circulation, dispel wind, and alleviate pain, especially headaches and menstrual disorders. There is some traditional use of Sichuan Lovage for supporting liver and gallbladder health, particularly in herbal formulas intended to promote the flow of "qi" and bile. In TCM theory, a "sluggish" gallbladder may be addressed by promoting the smooth flow of qi and blood, for which Chuanxiong might be included alongside other herbs. However, these uses are rooted in the traditional energetic concepts of TCM and not in the biomedical understanding of gallbladder function or pathology (such as after gallbladder removal). There is currently little to no scientific research specifically validating the use of Sichuan Lovage for gallbladder conditions, whether sluggish function or post-cholecystectomy support. The evidence rating reflects that while there is a traditional precedent for its inclusion in formulas for liver and gallbladder qi stagnation, the specific connection to gallbladder health as understood in Western medicine is tenuous and not directly supported by clinical trials or pharmacological data.
