Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Jamaican Sarsaparilla (Smilax regelii, sometimes referred to as Smilax ornata) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean. Traditionally, sarsaparilla has been used as a general blood cleanser, tonic, and for supporting a range of health concerns, including skin conditions, rheumatism, and hormonal balance. Some traditional herbalists have used it to support liver and gall bladder health, especially in the context of "sluggish" digestion or detoxification. However, these uses are based on anecdotal and empirical traditions rather than rigorous scientific investigation. There is no direct scientific evidence linking Jamaican sarsaparilla to improved gall bladder function, nor any studies examining its effects in people who have had their gall bladder removed. The connection to gall bladder support is therefore largely traditional and speculative, with little to no clinical data to validate its effectiveness for this specific purpose. As such, while sarsaparilla may be included in traditional formulations aimed at digestive or liver health, its direct benefit for gall bladder conditions remains unproven and should be regarded with caution.
