Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Hedyotis, commonly known as Oldenlandia or by its species name Hedyotis diffusa, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Hedyotis is valued for its purported "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties. It is often included in herbal formulas intended to address conditions believed to involve heat or toxin accumulation in the liver and gallbladder systems, such as jaundice or biliary disorders. However, traditional texts and formula indications typically focus on clearing damp-heat and supporting liver and gallbladder function in a broad sense, rather than specifically addressing a "sluggish" gallbladder or cases where the gallbladder has been removed.
From a scientific perspective, there is very limited evidence to support the use of Hedyotis for gallbladder health or for compensatory support after gallbladder removal. Most research on Hedyotis has focused on its potential anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties, with studies largely conducted in vitro or in animal models. There are no high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy in treating gallbladder dysfunction, gallstones, or post-cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) adaptation. Therefore, while its use is grounded in traditional practice, scientific evidence for its effectiveness in this context is weak or absent.
