Evidence supporting the use of: Canadian Goldenrod
For the health condition: Gall Bladder (sluggish or removed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly by Indigenous peoples and later by European herbalists in North America. Its applications have primarily focused on urinary tract health (as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory), as well as for upper respiratory issues and wound healing. In some traditional herbal practices, goldenrod has been included in formulas intended to support the liver and gallbladder, especially in cases described as “sluggish” gallbladder function. However, this use is based largely on the broader traditional association of bitter and aromatic herbs with digestive stimulation and not on any specific pharmacological action proven for goldenrod in gallbladder health. There are very few, if any, clinical or preclinical studies directly examining goldenrod’s effects on gallbladder function or in people who have had the gallbladder removed. Most available evidence focuses on its diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects in the urinary tract. Thus, the use of Canadian Goldenrod for gallbladder support is justified primarily by traditional herbal practice, with little scientific validation or direct evidence for this particular indication.
