Hesperidin is a flavonoid glycoside predominantly found in citrus fruits. Its use in supporting or treating free radical damage is justified by a growing body of scientific evidence. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress, leading to cell damage and contributing to aging and various diseases. Hesperidin possesses notable antioxidant properties, which enable it to scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative damage.
Multiple in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated hesperidin’s ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhance endogenous antioxidant defenses such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. For example, a 2015 review in Phytotherapy Research highlighted hesperidin’s capacity to attenuate oxidative stress in models of cardiovascular, neurological, and hepatic conditions. Furthermore, hesperidin supplementation has been shown to lower biomarkers of oxidative stress in animal models exposed to toxins or disease processes.
Human studies, though fewer, suggest hesperidin may reduce oxidative stress markers, particularly in populations with elevated baseline oxidative stress, such as those with hypertension or metabolic syndrome. However, most clinical trials are small and often incorporate hesperidin as part of a citrus extract or in combination with other bioflavonoids, making it difficult to isolate hesperidin’s effects.
In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting hesperidin’s role in combating free radical damage, largely based on preclinical research. While additional, high-quality human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy, hesperidin is scientifically recognized for its antioxidant potential.
