Green tea is widely recognized for its potential to counteract free radical damage, a process also known as oxidative stress. This effect is primarily attributed to its rich content of polyphenolic compounds, particularly catechins like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Numerous scientific studies, both in vitro and in vivo, have demonstrated that these catechins possess strong antioxidant properties, enabling them to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduce cellular damage caused by oxidative stress. Such damage is implicated in aging and a variety of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.

Randomized controlled trials and epidemiological studies have linked regular green tea consumption with lower markers of oxidative stress and improved antioxidant status in humans. For example, a 2011 meta-analysis in the journal Phytomedicine reported that green tea supplementation significantly increased plasma antioxidant capacity and reduced markers of lipid peroxidation. Animal studies have also shown that green tea extract can protect tissues from oxidative damage induced by environmental toxins or metabolic disorders.

While further research is warranted to clarify optimal dosages and long-term effects, current evidence robustly supports the use of green tea as an effective dietary antioxidant. Its widespread use in traditional medicine for general health promotion is now complemented by a substantial body of scientific research confirming its role in mitigating free radical damage.
