Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Green tea, specifically its active compound epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), has some scientific support for use in managing uterine fibroids. Several studies, including randomized controlled trials and laboratory research, have suggested that EGCG may help reduce the size of fibroids and improve related symptoms. A notable 2013 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in International Journal of Women’s Health found that women with symptomatic uterine fibroids who received 800 mg of green tea extract (containing EGCG) daily for four months experienced significant reductions in fibroid volume and improvements in quality of life compared to placebo. Laboratory studies have also shown that EGCG can inhibit the proliferation of fibroid cells and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in uterine fibroid cell lines, likely due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

However, while these findings are promising, the overall body of evidence remains limited, with relatively few clinical trials and a need for larger, longer-term studies to fully establish efficacy and safety. Green tea is not considered a primary or standalone treatment for fibroids, but it may serve as a supportive or adjunctive option. Historically, green tea was not specifically used in traditional medicine for fibroids, so its use for this condition is driven by recent scientific investigation rather than a long historical tradition. As always, individuals should consult healthcare professionals before using green tea extract as part of their fibroid management plan.
