Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, has a long history of traditional use for treating fever in various traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and Unani. In these systems, Vitex negundo leaves, roots, and sometimes flowers are used in decoctions or poultices as part of antipyretic (fever-reducing) formulations. The rationale for its use is primarily rooted in ethnomedicinal practices, where it is believed to possess cooling, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties that help bring down fever and alleviate associated symptoms such as body aches. There is some preliminary scientific research supporting its antipyretic activity. Experimental studies in animal models (e.g., rats and mice) have shown that extracts of Vitex negundo can reduce experimentally induced fever, likely due to the presence of flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, and other phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory effects. However, these studies are limited in scope, and clinical evidence in humans remains very sparse or lacking. Thus, while there is some scientific plausibility and early experimental support, the primary justification for its use in fever remains traditional, with scientific validation still at an early stage. Further clinical research would be required to firmly establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
