Sicilian Sumac (Rhus coriaria) has a long history of use in traditional medicine across the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions. Traditionally, sumac has been used for its purported cooling and astringent properties, and in some folk practices, it was employed as a remedy to help reduce fever. The rationale behind its use was based less on modern pharmacology and more on humoral theories and empirical observation. However, there is very limited scientific research directly evaluating the efficacy of Sicilian Sumac for treating fever in humans. Some laboratory studies have noted that sumac possesses antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically contribute to its traditional use in fever management, since inflammation often accompanies fever. Nevertheless, these findings are preliminary and have not established a clear or direct antipyretic (fever-reducing) effect in clinical settings. In summary, while Sicilian Sumac's use for fever is primarily supported by traditional practices, robust scientific validation is currently lacking.
