Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American tribes and later in Western herbalism. Historically, goldenseal was employed for a variety of health concerns, including as a remedy for digestive issues, mucous membrane inflammation, and infections. In traditional contexts, it was sometimes used to help reduce fever, especially when associated with infections or inflammatory conditions. This use was based on its perceived "cooling" and antimicrobial properties, attributed mainly to its alkaloids such as berberine.

However, scientific evidence supporting goldenseal as a treatment for fever is minimal to nonexistent. Most modern research on goldenseal focuses on its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory constituents, especially berberine, but these studies do not directly address its efficacy for fever reduction in humans. No randomized controlled trials or substantial clinical data demonstrate that goldenseal is effective or safe for lowering fever. Any antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects remain anecdotal and unproven by current scientific standards. As a result, while the traditional use of goldenseal for fever exists, it is not substantiated by strong clinical evidence and should not be relied on as a primary treatment for fever.
