Dianthus, also known as "Chinese pink" or "Qu Mai," has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) primarily for its diuretic and heat-clearing properties. In TCM, Dianthus is often included in herbal formulas aimed at "clearing heat" and "promoting urination," which can indirectly relate to the management of fever, especially when fever is attributed to "heat" or "damp-heat" syndromes. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" document Dianthus as a remedy for conditions characterized by heat, including certain types of fever. However, the traditional use is based on symptom patterns and TCM theory rather than the Western concept of infection-induced fever. From a scientific perspective, there is limited research evaluating Dianthus specifically for fever reduction. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and mild antipyretic effects, but these findings are preliminary and not directly translatable to clinical efficacy in humans. No high-quality clinical trials exist to validate its use for fever. Thus, the primary support comes from traditional use, with low-level evidence. The use of Dianthus for fever remains rooted in cultural and historical practices rather than robust scientific validation.
