Calendula (Calendula officinalis) has a long-standing history in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia, where it has been used to address a variety of ailments, including fever. Traditional uses generally involved preparing calendula as a tea or infusion or applying it topically for wounds and inflammation, with the belief that its anti-inflammatory and diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) properties could help reduce fever by promoting sweating and cooling the body. However, there is little scientific evidence to support its efficacy specifically for treating fever in humans. Most modern research on calendula focuses on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, with very limited investigation into antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects. The use of calendula for fever remains primarily rooted in folk and traditional medicine, and it is not commonly recommended for this purpose in contemporary herbal pharmacopoeias or supported by clinical trials. As a result, the evidence for calendula’s use in treating fever is weak and largely anecdotal, meriting a low evidence rating.
