Broussonetia species, most notably Broussonetia papyrifera (paper mulberry), have a history of use in traditional medicine systems in East Asia. In Chinese ethnomedicine and folk remedies, various parts of the plant (such as leaves, bark, or root) have been used to address ailments including fever, inflammation, and related symptoms. The traditional rationale often relates to clearing “heat” or “toxins” from the body, in line with the underlying concepts of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, there is very limited scientific evidence to support the antipyretic (fever-reducing) effect of Broussonetia species. A few laboratory studies have explored some anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of extracts from Broussonetia, but these studies do not specifically address fever reduction in clinical settings or animal fever models. No high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies provide direct evidence of efficacy against fever in humans. Thus, while the use of Broussonetia for fever is justified by tradition, there is minimal scientific validation, and its evidence rating is low.
