"Balsam" is a broad term that can refer to several aromatic resins obtained from various plants, such as Balsam of Peru (Myroxylon balsamum), Balsam fir (Abies balsamea), or Tolu balsam (Myroxylon toluiferum). Historically, these balsamic resins have been used in various traditional medicine systems, including Indigenous North American, South American, and European herbal practices. For example, Balsam fir has been used by Indigenous peoples as an ingredient in poultices and infusions for a range of ailments, including fevers, colds, and respiratory complaints. Likewise, Balsam of Peru and Tolu balsam have both been components of traditional fever remedies and cough syrups in South American and European herbalism. The rationale for their use in treating fever often relates to their aromatic and soothing properties, as well as their inclusion in multi-herb preparations designed to "cool" or "balance" the body. However, there is little to no modern clinical research specifically supporting the use of these balsams for fever reduction. The evidence for their efficacy is almost entirely anecdotal or based on traditional practice, and they are not widely recognized in contemporary herbal medicine references as primary antipyretic agents. As such, while there is a foundation in tradition for their use in managing fever, scientific validation is lacking.
