Arani (Premna corymbosa) has a long-standing history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for the management of fever (jwara). Classical Ayurvedic texts, such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, describe Arani as one of the constituent herbs in formulations for alleviating various types of fever. It is often included in polyherbal decoctions for its purported antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties. The rationale in traditional medicine is based on its classification as a herb that reduces “pitta” and balances bodily humors associated with febrile conditions.

From a scientific perspective, there are limited studies on Arani’s direct antipyretic effect. Some preclinical research suggests that extracts of Premna corymbosa may possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, which could theoretically contribute to fever reduction, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its use for fever is well-documented in the traditional context, modern scientific validation remains minimal. The evidence supporting its use for fever is primarily traditional, with a modest scientific rationale that warrants further investigation.
