For the health condition: Fever
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, has a longstanding history in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and folk medicine across parts of Asia and Africa. It has been used for various ailments, including fever. Historical Ayurvedic texts describe Achyranthes as having antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties. The plant is often included in formulations for fevers associated with inflammation or infections. However, the evidence supporting its use for fever is primarily anecdotal and based on traditional knowledge passed down through generations.
There are a few preclinical studies suggesting that extracts of Achyranthes aspera may have antipyretic effects in animal models. For example, some studies have reported reduced fever in rats induced with yeast or other pyrogens after administration of Achyranthes extracts. These effects are sometimes attributed to the presence of saponins, alkaloids, or flavonoids in the plant. However, clinical trials in humans verifying these effects are lacking or insufficiently documented in peer-reviewed literature. Therefore, while there is a significant basis in traditional medicine for using Achyranthes in fever, scientific validation is limited to preliminary experimental studies, and high-quality human evidence is currently lacking.
