Zinc is scientifically validated as important for eye health, particularly in relation to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Clinical studies, most notably the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and AREDS2, have demonstrated that supplementation with zinc, in combination with antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, beta-carotene, and later lutein and zeaxanthin, can slow the progression of intermediate and advanced AMD in older adults. Zinc is an essential trace mineral that plays a structural role in many enzymes and proteins, including those present in the retina. Deficiency in zinc has been linked to impaired vision, particularly under low-light conditions, due to its involvement in vitamin A metabolism and retinal function.

The AREDS formula, which includes 80 mg of zinc oxide, was shown to reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD by about 25% over five years in high-risk individuals. The benefit was primarily observed in people with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in one eye. While zinc supplementation has not been proven to prevent the onset of AMD or other eye diseases, its role in slowing AMD progression is well established. Overall, the use of zinc for eye health is supported by robust clinical evidence, though the effect is specific to slowing the progression of AMD and not for general vision improvement or prevention of other eye conditions.
