Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has scientific validation for its role in supporting eye health, particularly in relation to age-related eye conditions. Several large observational studies, such as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) conducted by the National Eye Institute, have found that high doses of vitamin C, in combination with other antioxidants (vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zinc), can help slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in individuals at high risk for the disease. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and helps neutralize free radicals in the eye, which may contribute to the development of cataracts and AMD. Epidemiological studies also suggest that diets rich in vitamin C are associated with a lower risk of cataracts, though intervention studies have not consistently shown that supplementation prevents cataract formation.

However, it is important to note that while vitamin C is included in eye-support formulations and has a plausible biological role due to its antioxidant properties, its benefits appear most robust when used as part of a broader combination of nutrients rather than alone. The overall quality of evidence is moderate, justifying a rating of 3 out of 5. The use of vitamin C for general eye health, outside of specific high-risk AMD cases, is less well-supported by clinical trials. Still, its inclusion in multinutrient eye health supplements is based on a reasonable scientific rationale.
