Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) are fats composed of medium-length fatty acid chains, commonly derived from coconut oil or palm kernel oil. Their use for supporting or treating lack of energy is primarily justified by scientific evidence. MCTs are more rapidly absorbed and metabolized than long-chain triglycerides because they are transported directly to the liver via the portal vein, where they are quickly converted into ketones and used as a fast energy source. This unique metabolic pathway means MCTs can provide energy more rapidly than other dietary fats, making them particularly beneficial for people with fat malabsorption disorders or those requiring quick energy, such as athletes or individuals on ketogenic diets.
