Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Magnesium is scientifically recognized as an essential mineral involved in numerous biochemical pathways in the human body, particularly those related to energy production. Magnesium acts as a cofactor for more than 300 enzymatic reactions, many of which are directly involved in the generation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of cells. Deficiency in magnesium can impair energy metabolism and has been associated with fatigue, muscle weakness, and reduced exercise performance. Several clinical studies have shown that individuals with low magnesium status may experience increased feelings of tiredness and lack of energy, and that supplementation can improve subjective measures of fatigue, particularly in populations at risk of deficiency (such as older adults, athletes, and those with certain medical conditions). However, in otherwise healthy individuals with adequate magnesium intake, supplementation has not consistently demonstrated significant benefits for increasing energy. Thus, the primary scientific rationale for magnesium supplementation in the context of energy is to correct or prevent deficiency, rather than to boost energy in the general population. Overall, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting magnesium’s role in maintaining normal energy levels, especially where deficiency exists.
