Folate (vitamin B9) has a well-established scientific basis for its use in supporting energy levels, primarily due to its critical role in cellular metabolism and red blood cell production. Folate is essential for DNA synthesis, repair, and methylation, as well as for the formation of healthy red blood cells in the bone marrow. A deficiency in folate can lead to megaloblastic anemia, a condition characterized by fatigue, weakness, and lack of energy due to impaired oxygen transport in the blood. Numerous clinical studies and reviews have shown that correcting folate deficiency restores normal red blood cell production and alleviates the associated symptoms of tiredness and low energy (Am J Clin Nutr, 2016; Blood, 2019).

However, it is important to note that in individuals who are not folate deficient, supplementation with folate does not appear to enhance energy levels or reduce fatigue beyond normal. The benefit is therefore specific to those with deficiency, which can occur due to poor dietary intake, certain medical conditions, or increased needs (e.g., pregnancy). In summary, there is strong scientific evidence supporting the use of folate to treat lack of energy when the cause is folate deficiency, but not as a general energy booster for the wider population.
