Magnesium is often used as a supplement to support emotional health, including symptoms like emotional sensitivity, anxiety, and mood fluctuations. The scientific rationale centers on magnesium's role in central nervous system function, neurotransmitter regulation (particularly GABA and glutamate), and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is involved in stress responses. Several observational studies have found that people with mood disorders, including depression and anxiety (which often involve heightened emotional sensitivity), frequently have lower magnesium levels compared to healthy controls. Some small randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest that magnesium supplementation can modestly improve symptoms of mild-to-moderate depression and anxiety, though these studies often do not isolate “emotional sensitivity” as a distinct outcome.

Despite plausible biological mechanisms and some supportive evidence, the quality of clinical data is limited. Most studies are small, short-term, or use magnesium as an adjunct to other treatments. Robust, large-scale RCTs specifically examining magnesium’s impact on emotional sensitivity are lacking. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis and some early evidence for magnesium's use in emotional regulation, the overall strength of evidence is low to moderate.
