Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin E (tocofersolan)
For the health condition: Eczema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin E (including the water-soluble form tocofersolan) has some scientific evidence supporting its use for eczema (atopic dermatitis), though the evidence is limited and not robust. Several small clinical trials have investigated oral vitamin E supplementation in patients with atopic dermatitis, with some studies showing a reduction in eczema severity and improvement in symptoms compared to placebo. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2015 in the journal International Journal of Dermatology found that oral vitamin E (400 IU/day for 8 months) led to significant improvements in the SCORAD (Scoring Atopic Dermatitis) index compared to placebo. Other studies have reported similar benefits, including reductions in inflammation and itch. The proposed mechanism involves the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin E, which may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the skin.
However, the quality of evidence is generally low, with small sample sizes, short durations, and a lack of standardized dosing or formulation. Most studies use oral vitamin E, while tocofersolan (a water-soluble form) is more often used for individuals with fat malabsorption, and evidence for its topical use is even more limited. No major guidelines formally recommend vitamin E as a standard therapy for eczema. While there is some scientific basis and early clinical evidence for vitamin E, larger and higher-quality studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness and establish clear recommendations.
