Tannins are polyphenolic compounds found in various plants, and their use in managing eczema is primarily rooted in traditional and folk medicine. Historically, tannin-rich extracts (such as those from oak bark, witch hazel, or black tea) have been applied topically to help with skin conditions, including eczema, due to their astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. The astringent effect is believed to help "dry out" weeping lesions and reduce irritation.
There is some limited scientific rationale for their use—tannins can precipitate proteins on the skin, forming a protective layer that may reduce irritation and promote healing of minor skin wounds. Additionally, some laboratory studies have shown that tannins possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which might theoretically be beneficial in eczema, a condition that involves inflammation and is prone to secondary infections.
However, robust clinical studies specifically evaluating tannins (unspecified) for the treatment of eczema in humans are lacking. Most available evidence consists of case reports, traditional accounts, and small studies using tannin-containing herbal preparations.
