Silk protein, particularly sericin, has gained some attention for its potential benefits in supporting the management of eczema (atopic dermatitis), primarily due to its moisturizing and skin barrier-protecting properties. Several small-scale scientific studies and in vitro analyses have indicated that silk proteins, when incorporated into textiles or topical formulations, may help reduce irritation and improve skin hydration in individuals with eczema. For example, some clinical trials have evaluated the use of silk-derived fabrics for clothing and observed improvements in eczema severity compared to conventional cotton garments, likely due to silk’s smooth texture, reduced friction, and its ability to maintain moisture while inhibiting the growth of certain bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus). Additionally, silk protein-based creams have demonstrated some promise in enhancing skin barrier function and reducing trans-epidermal water loss in limited studies.

However, the overall quality and size of available studies are limited, and there is not enough robust evidence to firmly establish silk protein as a standard treatment for eczema. Most dermatological guidelines do not yet include silk protein products as a first-line therapy, and larger, high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.
