Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus (unspepcified)
For the health condition: Eczema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus species have been studied for their potential role in the management of eczema (atopic dermatitis), particularly in children. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated whether supplementation with certain Lactobacillus strains can reduce the severity or incidence of eczema. Some studies, particularly those using Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, have reported modest benefits in reducing eczema symptoms or preventing its development in high-risk infants, especially when administered during pregnancy and early infancy. However, the results are inconsistent across studies, with several trials showing no significant effect.
Systematic reviews and guidelines, such as those from the World Allergy Organization (WAO), acknowledge a possible benefit of probiotic supplementation (including Lactobacillus strains) for prevention of eczema in high-risk infants, but emphasize that the evidence is of low to moderate quality and not all Lactobacillus species or strains are effective. There is less support for probiotics as a treatment for established eczema, and the evidence does not suggest a large or consistent clinical effect. Current clinical guidelines do not universally recommend probiotics for eczema treatment, but recognize that certain strains may be considered for prevention in specific populations.
In summary, there is some scientific evidence suggesting a potential benefit of select Lactobacillus strains for eczema prevention, but the overall effect is small and not consistent. The evidence for treatment of established eczema is weaker.
