Iridoids are a class of secondary metabolites found in a variety of medicinal plants, including Plantago, Gentiana, and Scrophularia species. Their use for eczema (atopic dermatitis) is primarily based on traditional herbal medicine practices, particularly in Asian and European phytotherapy. Historically, iridoid-containing plants have been applied topically or taken orally to reduce inflammation and promote skin healing. Folk medicine traditions cite their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties as beneficial for skin conditions like eczema.

From a scientific perspective, some in vitro and animal studies indicate that iridoids may exert anti-inflammatory effects, modulate immune responses, and support skin barrier function—mechanisms relevant to eczema pathophysiology. However, direct clinical evidence in humans for the efficacy of iridoids or iridoid-rich extracts in treating eczema is limited. Most available studies focus on the overall plant extract rather than isolated iridoids, and are often preliminary or lack rigorous controls.
