Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ethyl linoleate is an ester of linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid. Its use in supporting or treating eczema (atopic dermatitis) has some scientific rationale, primarily due to the known barrier-repair and anti-inflammatory functions of linoleic acid in skin. Several studies have shown that the skin of individuals with eczema often has reduced levels of linoleic acid, leading to impaired barrier function and increased transepidermal water loss. Topical application of linoleic acid or its derivatives (including ethyl linoleate) has been shown in some small clinical and preclinical studies to help restore skin barrier integrity, reduce inflammation, and improve symptoms of eczema. However, the direct evidence for ethyl linoleate specifically (as opposed to linoleic acid itself) is relatively limited, with only a handful of studies or patent applications suggesting possible benefits in formulations for atopic dermatitis. Most of the available research focuses on linoleic acid or related oils (such as sunflower oil), with ethyl linoleate often being included for its emollient properties and ability to enhance skin penetration. There is a plausible scientific basis for its use, but large-scale, well-controlled clinical studies are lacking. Thus, while ethyl linoleate is used in some dermatological products for eczema, the strength of the direct scientific evidence supporting its use remains modest.
